How to Paint if You Have Water Damage

How to Paint if You Have Water Damage

Have you noticed any water stains on your homes interior walls? They could be an indicator of serious water damage.

Water damage is something that every homeowner dreads, but it’s something that many have had to deal with. It’s not an interior painting project for fun, but it will be necessary. If you think you’re ready to paint the affected area, there are a few factors that you should consider. If the drywall was also damaged, ensure that it is repaired first before you get to the paint. You can then enjoy seeing your home restored to its beautiful finish.

What You’ll Need

If you’re taking on the task of repairing water damage in your home, you’ll need to check off the tools and materials on this list to complete the project. You’ll likely need to replace severely damaged drywall, which would be the quickest and surest way to get rid of the water damage. You’ll need a drywall compound, primer, a paintbrush or roller, scraper, putty knife, sandpaper, and a sponge. As a warning, be sure to always wear necessary protective gear so that you aren’t inhaling any toxic dust or fumes.

Water Stains

Visually inspect and feel the surface for dampness and changes in color. Be careful to search for signs of mildew or mold. If mold or mildew is present, you should consult a professional remediation service to ensure that the air quality in your home remains safe and healthy for your family. Allow the damaged areas to completely dry and place a heater or fan on the location. If no mold or mildew is present, paint over the area using an oil- or alcohol-based primer. Use a feathering technique to the undamaged areas to avoid creating raised paint areas. Use a brush or roll for the finishing coat to match the rest of the surface. If necessary, repaint the entire surface to ensure that the entire area completely matches.

Repairing Drywall

Assess the damaged drywall to see if it is still attached to the studs underneath. Reattach any loose drywall to the studs. Use your scraper to remove loose and peeling paint from the surface and sand the area to achieve a level surface. Use a damp sponge to wipe the surface clean and then proceed to paint the previously damaged area.
