Utilize These Tips When Painting Or Staining Your Vinyl Deck

Columbia Paint Vinyl DeckMany homeowners prefer vinyl decking to wood decking due to its low maintenance needs. Vinyl decks have become more popular because they are solid and durable. Although the vinyl color is believed to be permanent, it will gradually fade over time. If you want to change the color of your deck or if its color has faded, you can paint or stain it. Here are some valuable tips when painting or staining your vinyl deck.

Remove Mold And Mildew

If you’re planning to stain or paint a vinyl deck, removing any debris and mildew first is essential. To start, apply a deck cleaning solution to the surface of your deck and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then, brush the deck before rinsing off the solution and any residue with a water hose. Follow the wood grain and sand in the same direction when sanding the deck. Finally, use another cleaning solution to give the deck a final cleaning, rinse it thoroughly, and allow it to dry to remove mold or mildew.

Paint Or Stain Your Vinyl Deck?

Apply an external latex stain-blocking primer specifically designed for vinyl decks to paint your vinyl deck. Once the primer has dried, apply the latex floor and patio paint in a satin or semi-gloss finish. The higher gloss levels you choose, the more mildew resistance your deck will have, and the easier it will be to clean. If you want to stain your deck, skip the priming step. Apply a high-quality acrylic latex solid color deck stain specially designed for vinyl decking.

Here Is What You Should Remember

If you decide to paint or stain your vinyl deck, remember that you may have to do it again in the future. Decks are exposed to a lot of wear and tear from the weather and foot traffic, which means that even the best paints and stains will eventually fade. When you’re ready to reapply the paint or stain, use a latex coating instead of an oil coating, as the latter can develop cracks quickly.
