Painting 101: Should You Paint Or Stain Your Kitchen Cabinets?

Sometimes we long for a little change in our kitchen, but not a complete overhaul that puts your kitchen out of commission for weeks at a time. Occasionally what you want is more akin to a facelift. And the best way to do this in a kitchen is to update your cabinets. You don’t have to do a total cabinet replacement, however. You can completely update the look of your kitchen just by changing how the cabinet faces look with either paint or stain – it is even a doable DIY project for most people. But which one is better?

Columbia Paint Kitchen Cabinets

You have the option to paint or stain your kitchen cabinets.

How Much Change For Your Kitchen Cabinets

Start by assessing how much you want the cabinets to change visually. The main thing to remember is that paint completely covers the wood. It is an opaque layer, while a stain adds a see-through layer on top of the wood grain. Stains come in a wide variety of colors, but all of them will allow the natural texture and pattern of the wood to show through. If you don’t want that, then a stain is not the right choice. Paints also come in far more colors than stains.

How Much Work Will It Be?

If you currently have painted cabinets and want them to be stained instead, that will be a lot of work. You have to stripe the paint off (if it is old, lead-based paint, this can be dangerous) and then treat and sand the wood and apply the stain. If the wood is already stained and you want it stained, you will have to use the same or a darker color. If the wood is already painted and you want to paint, you must clean, sand, and prime.

How Does It Match Your House?

Remember that you want a kitchen that fits the style and interior paint job of the rest of your home. A woodsy wood kitchen is out of place if your home is ultra-modern. The stain will be the best fit if your home is super traditional.

How Much Does It Cost?

There is no considerable difference in price between painting and staining, so this shouldn’t be part of the decision. The tools you use to apply them are similar, and the skill set is essentially the same.
