6 Different Types of Painting Tools and Their Uses

When conducting a painting project, it’s important to have all the proper painting tools and painting materials and an understanding of what they are and how to use them.

Painting is one of the quickest and cheapest ways to transform a room’s look completely. While it doesn’t have the full effect of a complete remodel, the new color can make a room feel brand new without being different functionally. If you want to have the best painting outcome, you need to be organized and have a plan to complete the task safely and efficiently. Don’t jump into the painting project before you’ve made sure you have all the proper painting tools and painting materials that you’ll need and an understanding of what they are and how to use them. Read on for a brief overview of several common painting tools and their uses.

Paint Remover

Depending on the state of the room you’re painting, you might want to use a paint remover or striper first (only if there are many coats of paint on there or a lot of old drips and damage). This product will let you wash the paint off the walls. You have to wear gloves and protective clothing! Make sure that you air the room out when you’re using it. Apply it with a sponge and wipe away the old paint.

Painters Tape

This type of masking tape is easy to apply and remove without peeling off the paint you just spent time applying. It is used to cut off different colors and protect things that aren’t meant to be painted, like windows.

Drop Cloth

Speaking of protecting things that shouldn’t be painted, you should have a large drop cloth to cover the floor and any furniture that you can’t remove from the room.

Paint Guides and Edgers

Paint guides and edgers are tools meant to help you cut in and get straight lines without messing up things already painted. They are suitable for areas where different colors meet, like between rooms or ceiling joints.

Rollers

Rollers are great for applying paint over large areas and having it go on smoothly. Rollers won’t leave brush strokes and make applying paint easier and quicker.

Brushes

There are various types of paintbrush options ranging in size and shape. You can choose from bristles and foam of varying sizes and styles. Some have angles, and others are straight cut. Make sure you have brushes that will fit all of the different crevices and corners for your project.
