Interior design is a tricky element of making your home look pretty. We’re pretty sure why there’s an entire industry and career path dedicated to it. Paint colors, window dressings, and room layouts are only scratching the surface. Underneath the tip of the iceberg, though, are some pitfalls brought about by inexperience or misguided notions of what interior design is.
Getting The Scale Wrong
The sense of scale is immensely important. Sadly, it can go horribly wrong. Incorrect scale measurements can turn your home into an awkward reenactment of Alice in Wonderland. What do we mean by this? Make sensible selections when you are choosing different pieces of furniture. If something is too big or too small, it can look disconcerting and ruin the aesthetic you want to showcase.
Going Overboard on Making the Room Match
On the whole, mixing and matching can lead to some surprisingly cohesive results. But when you lean too hard in one of these directions, everything can go awry. When every couch and chair look identical, that doesn’t exude a sense of unity. Instead, it indicates that your taste in furnishings is rather monotonous. Your house is not a furniture store, so don’t let that vibe permeate throughout the living room, dining room, and so on!
The Contrast Just Doesn’t Work at All
We recommend striving for complementary elements. This is another approach that can invigorate the room and bring some much-needed balance. The room shouldn’t feel chaotic. Too much going on isn’t the right way to put interior design principles into action! Pick one fundamental element that you can use to harmonize your surroundings. Look at the features, colors, textures, and styles that present themselves.
Accidentally Creating Excessive Clutter
A lack of storage can lead to congestion. Crowded rooms are unsightly and reflect poorly on you. Thus, they become a source of stress and anxiety when you’re expecting visitors. This dread probably leads you to avoid inviting over friends and family you haven’t seen for months. Leave ample floor space to make movement easier. Don’t cram every available surface with something to look at – it can be visually overwhelming.
