Planning To Paint Or Stain Your Vinyl Deck? Use These Helpful Tips

Columbia Paint Vinyl Deck

Utilize these helpful tips.

Many homeowners choose vinyl decking over wood decking because of the low maintenance. Vinyl decks have increased in popularity because of their hardness and durability. Although the vinyl color has been described as permanent, it will fade with time. When this happens, or if you want to change the color of your deck, deck staining is an option. Consider these valuable tips for painting or staining your vinyl deck.

Remove Mold And Mildew

A vinyl deck most likely has debris and mildew that must be removed before you stain or paint it. Start by applying a deck cleaning solution to the surface of your deck. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes before scrubbing it with a brush. Rinse the solution and any residue with a water hose. It would be best if you were sure to sand in the same direction as the wood grain, not across it. Finally, use a solution to clean the deck one last time. After doing so, allow the deck to dry after thoroughly rinsing it to remove mold and mildew.

Should You Paint Or Stain?

Apply an external latex stain-blocking primer designed for vinyl decks. Then, apply latex floor and patio paint in a satin or semi-gloss finish. The greater the gloss level, the more mildew resistance you will have and the easier it will be to clean your vinyl deck. If you’re going to stain your deck, skip the priming. Apply a high-quality acrylic latex solid color deck stain designed for vinyl decking.

Here Is What You Should Remember

If you paint or stain your vinyl deck, you will likely need to repeat the process. Decks suffer a lot of wear and tear from weather and foot traffic exposure, so even the best paints and stains will fade over time. Remember to use latex coating while reapplying paint or stain, as oil coating can quickly develop cracks.
